Has anyone heard or read anything about some Aruba Government plan to remove palapas from Eagle Beach?

Thank you.

It's an article from Forbs written in January .

Lots about sin tax and this .

And now more changes are in store for visitors to Aruba with the implementation of removing palapas along the famed Eagle Beach beginning May 2019. Shade is the most important thing for many visitors and this new law could result in tourists using cheap umbrellas which would forever change the beauty of the beach. Timeshare owners are currently being contacted to sign a petition to the Government to stop this change in the Beach Management Policy.

Hopefully they go through with getting rid of palapas

Why would anyone want the palapa removed?

To give the beach a more open view.

Sorry....doesn't make sense. As long as Aruba continues to dump thousands of cruise ship people on their beaches in addition to the thousands of new vacationers who will reside in all the new condos going up ...the 'open view' is at best some government official's mythical response to over crowding!!!!

At least with a palapa there is some privacy. All I can picture is wall to wall people all trying to be in the front row. The Palapas at the Divi A I and the village and links are at least 50 yards off the water. Still have a clear view of the water

If Aruba is trying to be Punta Cana—- they’re off to a great start.

I totally agree, Ann. But that is the reason this government gives for removing them.

The article was written in January and it stated the palapas would be taken down in May . The palapas are still on Eagle beach . Why Eagle beach and not Palm beach ? What about Druif beach ? Baby beach ? Something doesn't smell right with the article .

Where may I find the info saying the government's reason for removing the palapas? Did they post something in the local papers or in some directive to Eagle Beach resorts? How did you find out the government's reason?

Thank you.

Newspaper articles and the governmental website. But in Papiamento or Dutch. It is a law that passed many years ago, but was never enforced until now. Main reason: hotels and vendors are claiming public beach by putting up all kind of structures. This way the beach is uninviting for the people that live on the island (some places - not Eagle Beach - the effectively chase you away) and the beaches have so many structures that the open view and beauty of the beach is gone.

Thank you for that info.

It is certainly a serious decision with several huge ripple effects.

As for the 'beauty'..... as the government allowed and still allows more building down there, even now at the east end of the island, did they not envision the side effects of all this building.... the increases in visitors with the same goal in mind, the beaches??

Beach shade and seating is such a requirement, for them to remove it, to try to make up for all the building??
There are no words I can think of to describe the reverse effects of such a move by them.
