Drive to JFK from Northern Westchester took less than anticipated - lots of construction going on - only took a little over an hour - our limo drive drove pretty fast. Check-in was a breeze at Jet Blue & we got the TSA Pre-check again - so no taking off shoes, belts, laptop out of backpack.

Flight to Aruba was uneventful, hardly any lines at customs, got our bags & picked up 2 bottles at the duty-free. Tropic now has a van to take you to a location near Price Rite to pick up the car. Unfortunately, there must have been a traffic accident - the police blocked the exit at the circle where Talk of the Town is. So we drove around the circle & followed cars since I've never taken any other way to the hotel area. Finally wound up on the road where El Gaucho's & Que Pasa are and continued on to LG Smith Blvd. We were both tired & skipped the beach that first day. Decided to just unpack & have dinner.

The beach at Costa Linda was more wider than it was last year. Entry in front of CLBR beach was a bit tough & we found the entry and exit much easier in front of the Bacuti Bar. Ocean was crystal clear with small waves. Costa Linda planted some small palm trees in front of the first row of palapas. When a cruise ship is arriving, it appears that it’s heading for the beach at Manchebo.

When we went for dinner on Saturday, we noticed a lot of people that were really dressed up (tuxedos, gowns) heading towards the end of the building (towards the ocean) that the Seaport casino was also in. The waiter at Hopi Bon said that it was Kiwanis having a Black Tie event. He said that it was really bad for business since so many people went to this event (we saw them arriving for the entire duration of dinner), which made parking more difficult. When we left to drive back to our resort, we noticed cars parked all over the place - especially on the sidewalks. I'd be pretty uncomfortable if I had to wear a Tux in this weather.

This morning (on Sept. 10) there was a lot of dark smoke coming from the high-rise area. DW first noticed it around 6:30 AM & heard the fire truck sirens. From CLBR, it was hard to determine exactly where it was. The smoke didn't stop until around 3:00 PM. One of our friends staying at CLBR said that the fire was at the Bird Sanctuary & was thought to be suspicious. But we didn't see anything written in the Aruba Today tourist newspaper (didn't think they'd report it), so we don't know any details - other than seeing that dark smoke most of the day. A few days later, DW talked to one of the beach attendants who said that the government considered the fire to be suspicious & was investigating.

On Friday, Sept 14th, we started to feel the effects of those storms - no breeze all morning with rough waves. Started to get the breeze back in the afternoon, but the sea was very choppy. The weather affected our dinner cruise on the Monforte (I have details in the Restaurant review). Noticed some interesting cloud formations.

Took a walk towards ABC & CDM to check out their beach - looks like a lot of the rocks exposed.

The effects of the storms still persisted on Saturday, Sept 15th - so, it was a little uncomfortable on the beach - sand was hot and there was very little breeze. We attempted to go into the ocean once, but waves were rough & we saw some people getting knocked down. We cooled off in the pool. The waves reached higher up the beach and made a little 6 to 8 inch lake which the birds liked. The waves also brought in some seaweed - the one that looked liked cut grass.

The strong breeze finally returned on Monday, Sept. 17th; the waves were still rough, but we were able to time our entry and exit - looks like you'd get 4 or 5 large waves & then it would pause for a minute or so. We went snorkeling at Boca Catalina - it's an easy entry, but when we were heading back to shore it was a little tough with the current. We didn't bring fins because they're too heavy - we'll shop around for light-weight fins when we get back home. Ocean was very clear and we saw many beautiful fish, but no turtles.

We saw black smoke again on 09/22 - which appeared to be coming from downtown Oranjestad, but we later found out that it was at the garbage dump.

In the last few days we haven't seen any change in the beach conditions - waves still rough at times where you had to time your entry and exit. On our last day (09/27) the waves were still rough - we only went in once - timed the entry OK, but DW got knocked down even though I was holding her hand. Just did the pool after that.

On departure day (09/28), had lunch at West Deck, went to drop off the car at Tropic (across from Price Smart) - but instead of moving the luggage from the car to their van, Tropic drove us to the airport in the rental car. The Jet Blue line only had about 5 parties in front of us. Check in process went very smooth until we got to the second screening area - an agent told us that we were selected for enhanced security - DW & I were separated with an agent patting her down and then an agent giving me a pat-down. So, at JFK we got TSA Pre-Check, but in Aruba we got the pat down. On the flight we hit some heavy turbulence for only a few minutes - otherwise, flight was uneventful.

Counting down till next September
