We had a 5am AA flight with a layover in Miami. I should have known this was going to be a rough flight as soon as my bag weighed in at 52 lbs even though both scales I used at home said 48. My pleading fell on deaf ears so all underwear was tossed in the trash. Sorry to anyone who gets free “shows” over the next weeks! Off to security where I was treated like a bunk mate in a jail. Thankfully, my TSA screener was a female! The wife was not to happy, but she will get over it, LOL. Arrived at our gate 20 minutes before boarding and guess what? One of the engines is throwing off “a little smoke” so the flight was delayed while the issue was assessed. I don’t recommend watching as the mechanics try to trouble shoot the issue. With all the shoulder shrugging, arm flailing and overall clueless looks on their faces, it just does not give you that vote of confidence you were hoping to see. After a hour delay, we were told the issue was fixed. Fixed? I watched the entire time and never seen anyone do ANYTHING! The only mechanic that appeared to do something was holding a roll of DUCT TAPE?! To board or not to board, that is the question. Knowing that Aruba was so near, yep we boarded. Takeoff went smoothly, so that was a huge relief. One hour in, a guy in the back of the plane starts yelling. He was feeling very good and was upset because he was cut off. Not exactly sure what happened, but about 10 minutes later, a huge raucous started and ended with another passenger laying on top of the drunken guy. Turns out we a air marshal on board and when he approached this guy, he threw a punch. The air marshal cuffed this guy and threw him back in his seat. Once we landed in Miami, the police greeted us at the gate and he was escorted off the plane to a roar of cheers. Thankfully, the second leg was uneventful and we landed in Aruba without further incident. Off to Aruba Customs. We filled out our immigration forms online, so we were sent to the automated lines. My turn came and it seemed like everything went fine except for the fact the doors would not open to let me out. 15 minutes later, I was told to go out another gate. Hope it worked properly or I may have an issue when it comes time to leave. Luggage was waiting and off to More4less to get my car. Signed the papers and off to Eagle Aruba! Check-in was fast as usual and it was great to see all the staff again! Dropped our bags at the room and off to the grocery store for all the essentials, sunscreen and ALCOHOL! Chilled by the pool the rest of the day, had a great meal at DoubleDown and crashed about 9. Day 2 started with a in room cooked breakfast, and a long walk on the new path in front of Eagle Beach. On the beach by 10 and spent the rest of the day there. Ran into a few friends and chatted for some time. Then did…..NOTHING!! AHHH, this is why we come back year after year! Went to Terraza Italiana for a amazing sunset and dinner. Best Italian food on the island and Mima is a sweetheart! We both had the risotto and lasagna which was delicious! Off to the Ritz where my wife was lucky and hit for $1200 on a slot! Really starting to relax and forget about work…….
