You’re in the paint business aren’t you? At one point I thought about painting my red brick fireplace but opted to replace with slate as was afraid of it not holding up and becoming a mess. Recently I’ve noticed 5 houses in my ‘hood that have painted the red brick on their houses various shades of grey and they all look fantastic. They all have some grey siding/cedar shingles on them too, so not completely brick. Is that going to hold up over time?

No answer for you but we just discussed this at lunch today. My SIL’s sister did gray on their chimney and she was impressed with how it came out.

Yes I am, but unfortunately I can't answer your question. I used to work in a couple of our stores, but I've been at our headquarters for over 20 years. So my technical knowledge is pretty much gone. Go into one of our stores and ask somebody there. Not sure if we have any stores by you. Sorry!

I didn't know Kelly was in the paint business. What company do you work for?

I was just curious, I don’t have any brick to paint except my chimney but it doesn’t bug me. It really transforms the houses I’ve seen. I’ll do surveillance work over the next 20 yrs and see how it holds up

Personally I prefer natural brick and natural wood. https://www.southingtonpainting.com/blo ... ck-chimney

When Kelly tells the name I wil confirm if there is a 'branch' here on the island  If I am remembering the correct 'brand'....there is!

I didn't know what you did for work. I'm curious to know what company also.

I like painted brick also. Gray sounds nice with gray siding or shingles.

I did some googling....the brick people say don’t. There were pictures of what I was afraid could happen and you’re turning a maintenance free exterior into one that will require maintenance every 3-5 years. There was mention of a stain that was a better option and won’t alter the physical properties of the brick and allows the brick to breath. Hopefully the homes I’ve seen are stained and not painted, comes in grey. Sounds like a painstaking process to do it right with cleaning first and staining just the brick and not the grout.

Karen my sister bought a kit and did the fireplace inside of her old house.
It was beautiful

Let's see if this photo works here

That does look nice Kat. I got the impression that the issues with painting were mainly moisture with exterior jobs.

Kat - love it!

I just mentioned to David the other day that I’d like to do the overlay on our gas fireplace in the family room. We whitewashed it last year and I like it better than the brick color, but think the brick overlay in neutral tones would really update the room nicely.
