Here is what the plumber thinks is the problem. As I was taking a shower yesterday morning, water was coming out of this central air vent. At first he thought he would have to cut the ceiling but after taking off the grate and inspecting the pipes where he saw no leaks, he decided against it. He then went up to shower and removed catch drain thing were the water goes down and discovered this. There’s a rubber seal that was very badly corroded, that’s where he thinks the water was escaping. We had this stand up shower installed in 2011, so he advised Sue to call the people who installed it to see if they will warranty it. Sue will have to finish the rest up, they are suppose to be here Monday. Almost forgot this, after finding the seal in that condition, his first question to Sue, "Do you use Draino?" Yes, say's it's the worst thing to use, will corrode pipes and gaskets. Couple of my customers I told one said he uses bleach and another said he just runs scalding hot water down his and never has a problem. So far were into it for $130.

I used to put baking soda topped off with vinegar and let it bubble up and work for a bit and then follow up with boiling water until I heard that was bad (the boiling water)so just hot water after the mixture Not sure why I stopped need to add to the todo list. Good luck on monday.

I hope you find out if it's still warranted. I haven't ever used drain cleaner here....never had a clog. But that's good to know about Draino.

ronnie our shower is exactly like that. just checked the rubber and its tight against the pipe. i replaced that cover with a new one that has a basket attached to the bottom of it to catch the hair. i do use liquid plumber or draino on the sinks, don't remember using on the shower but won't now. thanks for the heads up.

Spoke with the people who installed the shower and unfortunately they said it’s not under warranty. A guy is coming Monday between 4&5. They told me they charge $100 an hour plus parts. I told them what the plumber told me and they asked me to send them pictures of the pipes. I told her I can send you pictures but all you would see is pipes. I told her that the plumber saw no cracks in the pipes and that the gasket and sealer was badly deteriorated which he thinks is the problem. She said never mind sending pictures. Will see what happens Monday?

Plumbing problems are not high on my "Like" list. Seal and or drain assembly should be easy fix if that is what the problem is limited to. Here in FLA homes are built throughout using pcv type piping for both water supply lines and wastewater lines. Draino…..no no! Bleach, not recommended as reacts and softens plastic. All pros recommend distilled white vinegar down all drains periodically to keep free and clean. That includes the AC condensation line from evaporator coils to the house exterior!

Our master stand up shower is much the same, leaked down into Ken's office years ago. It was the seal around as well. The plumber "caulked the @#$*" out of it    We keep a close eye on it now. We just use a spiky snake thing for the drain clogs, never had to use a chemical product. But then, our show was put in back in the late 80's
Hope the Monday plumber can fix it at a reasonable price!

The guy came yesterday at 4:30 to fix the shower. He looked at the pipe and said right away I see the problem. Didn’t even turn the water on to see we’re it was leaking. He said the pipe that was installed is to small so he put in a larger one and recalked. I asked him since his company did the job will there be a charge. He said I didn’t install the pipes another worker did. Could not answer my question about price. It took him less than an hour. Took shower today and no leaking. Waiting to see what the price is. I’m hoping it’s good news. I really don’t want to battle.

It's a shame, but so many contractors really suck. You can't trust them as far as you can throw them. I hope it all works out for you.

Hope the bill is reasonable; on the upside, good lesson learned on the draino.
