He's back to the shelter now and doing okay. Here's his story.....he was adopted out as a kitten about 5-6 years ago and was returned about three years ago. I'm not sure what the story was when they returned him. A very sweet cat who "talks". There was talk of him having some kidney issues...for the last few months he was leaking urine wherever he was and seemed to have some difficulty in the litter box. Treated him with antibiotics which really didn't do anything. He went to the vet last week along with his medical records from his previous owner. Turns out that while they (previous owner) had him he had a blockage and they removed his penis and made his urethra larger  This is something the shelter director and associate didn't know. The opening has since closed to about a pinhole so the poor guy was not able to pee other than the leakage that we saw and he must have been so uncomfortable. He went in yesterday for surgery where they were able to correct the problem by enlarging the urethra. He's back at the shelter now and will have to wear a cone for about a month. :( He's a great cat and in spite of the fact that he had to have been so uncomfortable for awhile now, his temperament has been great. Wishing Benji a speedy recovery. I'll get a picture of him with his cone soon.

My shelter colleague is named Carol, so we swear he's calling her name when we go in the back room.

Oh my gosh, the poor baby. I'm so thankful there are shelters and people like you that work at them, Laura. I'd love to volunteer at one when I retire. I'm hoping by then there's no need for shelters, but I highly doubt it.

Unfortunately, there will always be a need. We can only help so many based on our resources...shelter size, volunteers and funds. If Benji was your own pet, he would have been to the vet sooner. Our staff handles alot of medical issues...deworming, eye meds, antibiotics, etc. We have to, because vet bills are very high. Getting reliable volunteers is not easy. I worked in HR for several years before I had to retire when the plant closed in 2004. I remember telling the outplacement people that I wanted to work with animals after dealing with people for so long  I've been at the shelter for 3 years and love it - I hope you can do the same when you retire..the furbabies need you.

Aw, poor little guy. Glad you were able to find out what his issue was & take care of it. I don't know if i could work in a shelter as I would want to take everyone home.

I spent some time with Benji today. He's a little low key, but snuggled up with me and is eating well.
