This is my niece (my husband's) and her husband's bar uptown. (they used to run the little Hideaway and moved to a larger place) It was known as the Rendezvous but everyone called it 'the vous' so he changed the name. It is one of the oldest bars. I was there yesterday and took this pic. The 5 story red brick building on the right is the H. D. Lee Mercantile building...the birthplace of Lee jeans. This is known as the Lee District part of downtown. There is a train track on the north side you can't see. A boxcar used to get backed up there for loading and unloading. They sold ice from the north side--crushed and blocks too apparently for those back in the day who had iceboxes. I remember when I was 4 or 5 going there with Mom and sometimes with my aunt for ice. There is a revitalization project going on so the street and sidewalk are torn up. The Lee building will become shops on the bottom and apartments on the other floors. The doors were open at the bar and they dropped about 5 concrete sidewalk slabs all at once into an empty trailer out front that was LOUD--you should have heard the language

Nice to hear history and stories of these towns. Thanks. Tara, I think I mentioned that one of my guitar amps was manufactured in
Salina circa 1983 by JMF. It's a prize and JMF is long gone. Do you know anyone who may have worked there?

No, Ralph, I don't remember if I knew anyone who worked there. Forty years was a long time ago.

Thanks for the history lesson from a small part of your town. Every one has heard of Lee jeans.
Nice that they are revitalizing and not tearing down. Good to put these old buildings to new use.
