It is true, it is not always `fiesta time’ at the Donkey Sanctuary. Last week the volunteers and the other donkeys had to say goodbye to the oldest donkey in their midst. This donkey, who went by the name of Watty, died after 51 years.

Until last week the proud donkey was in fine condition for his age. Until his final morning, when this elderly donkey did not get up for his feed. He tried, but after two steps he had to lie down again. It was clear that Watty was suffering, so the volunteers called the vet. He examined Watty and came to the conclusion that nothing could be done for him anymore. To save any more hardship and pain, the vet and the people of the sanctuary had to make the difficult decision to put this old donkey to sleep.

To make such a decision is really hard, as Watty was a much-appreciated inhabitant, who had come to live at the shelter from the time that it opened. He was admitted after having been mistreated and tortured; electrical wires around his neck were the cause of scars that would never heal. But the final fifteen years of his life he has had a peaceful, nice time, the last year of which he spent in retirement. That meant that he could stay in a closed off part of the sanctuary, which allowed him to eat unhurriedly without younger donkeys trying to steal his food. Watty has greatly enjoyed this extra peace and quiet.

Glad Watty was able to have peace in his last 15 years. No animal deserves to be abused. Thanks to the volunteers of the Donkey Sanctuary for all their hard work.
RIP Watty
