Well, the air circulation system on a plane is very differrent from the ones one cruiseships. You can’t compare them. We know from virusses from the past, like ebola and sars, that if there is a infected person on board of a plane that only the most near by seated persons are in risk as long as the infected person does not walk around in the plane. This is due to the way the aircirculation is and the filters they use.

It is wearing a mask that is kind of useless. But people seems to need that in order to feel safe.

If they did leave their seat, the possibility of contamination is high.
And yes, a regular mask will not protect anyone 100%. If an infected person sneezes and/or coughs, the force driving the droplets in the air can get past the mask of someone nearby, unless it is an N95 mask, individually fitted. And there is the psychological factor that makes one feel safer with a mask on.

and with most masks when you cough or sneeze those droplets get blown out the sides of the mask. right into the person sitting beside you.
