Found that 11 or 12 days is just right, a week isn't long enough & 2 weeks was too much

I thought I posted a reply last night but evidently I hit the wrong button! Well, that's what comes from getting older that dirt!!

We started out taking the charters out of Boston back in the early ninety's. They were from Saturday to Saturday and we always thought they were too short what with spending most of two days in transit. We finally wised up and, up to two years ago, flew out on Friday and came home a week from the following Monday. It seemed the best deal with plenty of time without draining the old bank account, ten days in all.

Unfortunately, physical limitations have kept us from going for the past two years, and I don't hold too much hope for the future.

We love the island and have made many friends there. Our stays have been at the Divi complex and will miss the staff, at least those who haven't retired.

John, sorry to read that your visits to Aruba might be coming to an end. Aruba will miss you.
Even though we have never met, we are neighbors. We live in Reading, right next door to you.
We started going to Aruba right after 9/11, and hope to continue for a few more years. We usually stay for 8 days, which appears to be enough for us. Tried 12 days once and it seemed to be too long. 10 days is more like it, but we also miss things at home if we stay too long. And, getting up in age, I'm not sure how many more years we will be able to make it.

Hi "P". Thanx for the thoughts.
Interestingly though, my son and his family live in Reading.

Yeah, age, health, patience, travel days, the ever changing make-up of the island, and lately some of the newbies to Aruba seem to be a part of that new make-up.
Notice I didn't say 'cost'. I have no problem making sure that our trips to Aruba are affordable without sacrificing any of what we like to do down there. That is not to say we don't gamble because of cost. Not so. The casinos down there are outright health hazards and neither my wife nor I want to deal with second hand smoke for any length of time.

So, perhaps our 2018 trip plus two more and that will be it! Once we have a "Whole Family" vacation down there right after our grandson's freshman year in college.

We're tired. Time to sit back and enjoy our memories without struggling to make more.

Hey lefty, I am formerly of Arlington. I taught at the Ottoson for 31 years, before retiring in 2001.
I know what you mean about the casino's; we "shy" away from them as well, partly because of the smoke and the noise but also I can think of more enjoyable ways to lose my money.
We took are daughter, son-in-law and 2 grand kids in 2010 and 2011. Stayed at the Surf Club because it provided something for the grand kids to do (lazy river, water slide, etc.) because they were 6 & 5 at the time.
Last Dec. (2017) our oldest son and his girl friend came with us. Did the ATV tour of the usual attractions.
Would like to get our youngest (37) son and his family to go, but they live in Kansas and it is not an easy trek for them. Plus he works with the military and can't get too much time off.
We plan on going again this coming Dec.; then we'll see after that. We do take a trip, or 2, to other locations and do the all adult all-inclusive as a change of pace from Aruba. They seem to be calling us a little more now than Aruba, but we will see.
Prefer to stay in the high rise section (mostly Hyatt) because we can step out the front door and have all the restaurants and shops in easy walking distance. Did stay at the Bucuti twice, and loved it. But nothing much happening in the evenings. So, we took taxi's to the high rise section most every night. Better off staying there.
Will be going to the Globe Travel Show in a couple of weeks, and maybe we'll get a good deal (or 2) and renew friendships with the vendors from Aruba.

Just to close the circle, I was born in Arlington myself, a long time ago. Lived on Lake St. in East Arlington opposite the Hardy School. My mother was an Arlington native, born and raised on Cleveland St. I don't remember too much about the town because we moved to Winchester in the mid '30's. when I was 5 years old.

We never were interested in buying a time share and being locked in to a particular time and had the option of taking other trips. We did a lot of cruising, been to Hawaii, Alaska and the Panama Canal as well as the Caribbean back when one dressed for dinner and had assigned table mates, etc. none of the mega ships with open dining and extra fees for the food you used to get on the regular menu -- and cheap drinks too, (relatively speaking)!

pmarrier: Thanks for the good thoughts. I'm still hoping to get down there at least one more time, but I've got to get a better hold on my elimination system before that, (no pun intended)! And lefty, yes, the island has had a lot of changes over the twenty odd years we've been going and not necessarily for the better. It's more crowded and expensive. Since it's become a popular cruise stop, it's got even worse!

Just for the record: Johntheott translates into John the official temperature taker, nickname from many years ago on the old Prodigy Aruba BB.

Bon Noche!

Thanks for clearing up that mystery for me  Hope you get to go back John.

We just did 3 weeks for the first time and hated to leave.

Does the Aruban government establish a maximum amount of time you can stay in Aruba as a tourist?

If you are from the States, you are allowed to stay 30 days. This can be prolonged to 180 days maximum. Dimas has to allow you to stay longer than 30 days. If you own a house or apartment on Aruba, this will not be a problem.

Dutch citizens can stay a maximum of 180 days without the need of permission of Dimas.

It was 3 weeks...probably from 2006-2016.
Before that it was 2 weeks from 1990-2005.
One week in 1988-1989.

Missed 2017.

Planning to return in 2018 for 2 weeks...sold a week of timeshare.

19 days for us at Dutch Village. The recently completed renovations make it nicer than ever! We own three weeks, but prefer to arrive on Sunday and leave on Friday to avoid the Saturday airport madness. Perhaps the airport renovation will eliminate that problem in the future.

Even after 19 days, we still hate going home.

We have decided to winter here where we know what the weather will be. We have friends who live and work here. We are more than familiar with most things Aruban. We are here for 9 weeks and will return each year for the same amount of time.
