ATA Is Concerned About Recent Crime Wave

December 16th 2012, Aruba.

ORANJESTAD-Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) will be investing US$35 million in
promoting the island abroad during 2013, an increase of 7 percent compared to
this year. Ronella Tjin Asjoe, Director of ATA says that the funds for promoting
Aruba abroad has gradually increased over the past years.

Ever since ATA became an independent organization from the government last
year, they have seen substantial advancement in funding in promoting Aruba
abroad. This is attributed to the addition of the room tax, and as of recent the
air ticket charge, which directly goes into the fund of ATA according to their
management plan.

Tjin Asjoe explained that the air ticket charge went into effect on September 1st
2012, but that the extra charge did not had an effect on the number of visitors
to Aruba. Visitor arrivals in the months of September, October, and November
have increased.

ATA is however worried about the recent crime wave effecting mainly the resort
area, as this could tarnish the island image as a safe destination. Past missing
cases of Natalee Holloway and Robyn Gardner still continues to be a challenge
for ATA at present, and are being dealt with accordingly.

Despite the safety challenges of Aruba today, the island continues to maintain
high scores among tourist as a very safe destination. We must make sure that
our safety factor does not come under attack says Tjin Asjoe. ATA is
continuously in contact with the Ministry of Tourism in monitoring the crime
situation in Palm Beach, and finding ways to fight it.
