attraction on its own for the city

ORANJESTAD-The rails for the streetcar in Oranjestad have arrived in Aruba
from The Netherlands last week. Preparation works for the placement of
the rails is scheduled to begin in March. The streetcar is one of the key
projects in the revitalization of the island’s capital.

Aruba will receive three streetcars, each carrying up to 70 passengers. The
streetcars will stop at eight different stops in downtown Oranjestad. The
turn around points of the rail are the cruise terminal in Oranjestad, and
the end of Main Street downtown. A stop will receive an arriving streetcar
on average every 8 minutes.

The streetcars will work on rechargeable batteries, avoiding the need of
above ground wires providing the vehicles with power. Aruba's green
streetcar rail system fits the government vision to have the island fully
dependent on green energy in the future.

Once operational the streetcar will move cruise passengers from the cruise
terminal in Oranjestad to Main Street, and other city attractions such as
the National Museum and back. It will provide the Main Street with much
needed shoppers. The streetcar will also have stops at strategic stops
such as the parking garage to be constructed behind the bus terminal in
Oranjestad, providing locals and stay-over visitors the opportunity to take
the streetcar to Main Street from there.

The streetcar in Aruba is unique in the Caribbean, and will be operational
by the end of 2012. The renovation and upgrade of the Main Street in
Oranjestad is scheduled to be completed at the same time.
