Government Will Introduce Parking Meters In Oranjestad
August 17th 2011, Aruba.
ORANJESTAD-The introduction of parking meters is one of the big projects pending to be implemented in Oranjestad. At present, Aruba's capital is going through a complete transformation process with many big projects ongoing, including the construction of the Linear Park, renovation of the water tower, reconstruction of main street, construction of the rails for the street car, renovation and expansion of the Court House.
To solve Oranjestad’s chronic parking shortage the government will soon construct 3 parking garages on strategic sites downtown, in addition, parking meters will be placed near main street. Ricardo Muller, Chief of Oranjestad's Traffic Department supports the plan for parking meters.
“ Parking meters avoid cars being parked for a very long time on the same spot. Many people working in the stores downtown usually park their cars nearby from 7:00am until 6:00pm, not leaving enough parking space for their customers.
With the installment of parking meters, store personnel will be forced to park their cars elsewhere and take the street car to work. The parking spaces nearby stores will then be used for customers who will use the parking meter.
Parking meters are common in the United States and Europe to solve parking issues. In addition, they provide income for the government, which can be used to fix roads and purchase traffic boards for downtown, “ said Muller.
