ORANJESTAD-The renovation of the water tower in Oranjestad is in the final phase of completion.
The start of the renovation began on January 28th of this year, and would take an estimated 6
months for completion. The renovation of the water tower is one of the many projects being
executed at the moment under the government’s master plan “Bo Aruba” (your Aruba), which
includes the extensive renovation of the island’s urban areas.

The water tower in Oranjestad was officially inaugurated on November 4th 1939, with the goal to
increase water preassure for the homes and businesses in the downtown area. A second water
tower was inaugurated soon after in downtown San Nicolas. Both water towers became useless
when the Water & Energy Company (WEB) decided to expand their plant in Balashi.

The government has placed some of its departments in the water tower until the late 1990's when
the tower was left abandoned. In 2001 the government sealed off the tower to avoid drug addicts
of empowering the empty building. In the years that followed the tower gradually began to decay,
later to such an extent that it was a danger to surrounding businesses and homes. Aruba
Monument Foundation became owner of the water tower in 2005, and has placed it on the list of
National Monuments.

Construction firm Van Kessel won the bid to renovate the water tower in Oranjestad at a price tag
of nearly US$ 1 million. Now that the structure of the water tower is nearly restored, it will be
painted with a special paint imported from The Netherlands that suits the exterior old material of
the tower best. The government Department of National Ordinance on Administrative Justice will
relocate to the water tower once the renovation is completed in July 2011.
